Volunteer Spotlight: Karen Fasino

The volunteers that comprise the LIG Global family take on various roles both within and beyond our organization that make them incredible individuals who are able to transform the lives of the people we serve. Karen Fasino is an exemplary volunteer who has been a lovely addition to our trips!

A former school teacher in Roxbury Township, NJ for over 30 years and now current school librarian for 5th and 6th graders, Karen Fasino has always played an influential role in the lives of young children. Outside of her work with children, Karen enjoys reading, going to the beach, and spending time with her family. In fact, it is family that helped her connect with LIG Global; Dr. Claudine Sylvester (current CEO of LIG Global) and Karen are sister-in-laws and, over the years, the many stories Karen heard about LIG Global piqued her interest. She found herself wanting to get involved firsthand and in June 2019, accompanied LIG Global to Dajabón, Dominican Republic on her first trip!

It was a profoundly life changing experience,” Karen remarked. During her time in Dajabón, Karen served in two roles: working with a nearby school as well as assisting our medical teams. Being a former teacher, Karen was the perfect person to work with the school-focused component of this trip, in which LIG Global worked with special needs students at the school, along with the help of some of our teen volunteers as well. Karen remarked on the pure joy and love that exuded from the children, making the experience all the more worthwhile. However, her impact in Dajabón did not end with the school. Upon finishing her morning work in the school, Karen would return to the hospital to aid the LIG doctors and nurses as they worked with local patients to provide them quality care. Karen’s experience was one she hopes to relive soon, and has intentions of joining LIG Global on a future trip, possibly this fall!

While it is without question that Karen made a lasting impression on the community we worked with in Dajabón, it is equally important to recognize the impression that Karen has left on the LIG Global community. Without her dedicated and enthusiastic efforts, we would not be able to aid the communities that we do! Thank you Karen for your amazing work with LIG!
